Iron
Iron is one of the minerals found in large quantities in the blood, with the rest distributed in the bone marrow, liver, and spleen. It contributes to the formation of hemoglobin – a protein found in red blood cells that is responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body’s cells and tissues. Without iron, red blood cells become fewer and smaller, and the cells don’t receive enough oxygen.
When the body’s iron level is low, the ability of red blood cells to transport oxygen from the lungs to other organs and systems is significantly reduced. Poor tissue oxygenation has medium- and long-term consequences, especially for a developing body, affecting its proper function. Iron also ensures proper brain function by delivering oxygen via the bloodstream, acts as an antioxidant, and helps combat free radicals in the body. It is also important for the muscular system, being present in myoglobin – a protein found in muscle tissue, essential for transporting oxygen to the muscles. Furthermore, it helps strengthen the immune system, which leads to illness prevention and temperature regulation.
Iron is the most widely used metal in key redox enzymes involved in cellular respiration and oxidation-reduction processes in both plants and animals.
Folic Acid
Folic acid, also known as pteroyl-L-glutamic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin from the B group. The human body cannot synthesize it, which is why the daily diet must include this vitamin.
Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin whose name comes from the Latin word folium (meaning "leaf"), as it was first obtained in laboratory conditions from spinach leaves. The vitamin is easily destroyed during food preparation, with large amounts lost during processing and preserving vegetables and grinding wheat. It occurs naturally in brewer’s yeast, liver, and leafy greens.
Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin)
Functions in the body
Vitamin B12 has anti-anemic action.
It acts as an intermediate compound in the formation of red blood cells. This vitamin is essential for the formation and development of erythrocytes, for the maturation of epithelial cells—especially those in the digestive tract—and for the biosynthesis and regeneration of folic acid, which is needed for the formation of red blood cells.
It acts synergistically with vitamins B6 and B9 and with iron; its action may also be enhanced by vitamins A, C, and E, as well as calcium and potassium.
